What is a URL slug?

A slug is the human-readable part of a URL that identifies a specific page — the bit after your domain, like /best-seo-tips in example.com/best-seo-tips. A good slug is short, lowercase, made only of letters, numbers and hyphens, and describes the page in a few keywords.

Why clean slugs help SEO

Search engines and people both read your URLs. A descriptive, keyword-rich slug gives Google an extra signal about the page topic, and a tidy slug is far easier to read, remember and share on social media or in messages. Stripping stop words and special characters keeps links short, avoids ugly %20 encoding, and prevents duplicate or broken URLs.

How to use this tool

1. Type or paste your page title into the box — the slug updates as you type.
2. Accented and non-English characters are transliterated to plain ASCII automatically (including Māori macron vowels for our NZ readers).
3. Toggle Remove stop words to drop filler words like a, the, of, to for a tighter slug.
4. Pick your separator — hyphens are recommended for SEO; underscores suit some code and file-naming conventions.
5. Set a max length to truncate long slugs neatly at a word boundary.
6. Hit Copy and paste the slug into your CMS, permalink field or code.
